Политический деятель колониального периода. Выходец из влиятельной нью-йоркской семьи, стал в 1733 верховным судьей Нью-Йорка, одновременно являясь вице-губернатором и исполняющим обязанности губернатора. Вошел в историю как председательствующий судья на процессе Дж. П. Зенгера [Zenger, John Peter] и один из основателей Королевского колледжа [King's College] (ныне Колумбийский Университет [Columbia University])
